Liberia has launched the Protect Our Resources Taskforce (PORT) to strengthen enforcement against illegal mining and oversee mineral resources. The move is part of a broader African response to unregulated mining, which undermines economic growth, environmental health, and regional security. Illegal mining has expanded across West Africa, the Congo Basin, and Southern Africa, with serious consequences for communities and ecosystems.
PORT will enforce licensing, monitor royalties, and ensure compliance with labour and environmental regulations. The initiative aims to reduce illegal mining and gold smuggling while promoting sustainable resource management.
