Thirty-five years after Ukraine's restoration of independence, Bishop Vitalij Skomarovskyj of Lutsk, president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops in Ukraine (Latin Rite), points to the gift of real religious freedom and the devastating reality of war.

In an interview with Vatican News, he recalls how genuine freedom of conscience is now experienced, while the nation continues to face the full-scale invasion. Echoing Pope St. John Paul II, he calls war a great scourge and says peace is priceless.

Yet amid the enormous price paid by defenders, he sees an enduring chain of solidarity from every corner of the world, giving strength and hope.
