Pope Leo XIV issued a historic apology for the Church's role in legitimising the transatlantic slave trade, a move that brings relief and consolation to African Catholics. In his first encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, the Pope asked pardon for the immense suffering inflicted on millions. Bishop Method Kilaini of Tanzania sees the encyclical as a gift for Africa, protecting the continent from new forms of slavery in the age of artificial intelligence. The apology acknowledges past wounds while affirming the immeasurable dignity of every human person.
