WITH JESUS DURING THE DAY
Commitment
As this day unfolds, I think about Pope Leo’s intention for this month: the evangelization of cities. Let us pray that, in large cities—often marked by anonymity and loneliness—we may find new ways to proclaim the Gospel, seeking creative means to build community.
How does this prayer resonate with me? What does it invite me to commit to? To whom can I offer a smile today? For whom can I accomplish something?
I recall the persecution of John the Baptist in today’s Gospel. Jesus himself experienced exclusion and persecution. In those who suffer in the cities, he continues to suffer even now.
“From the moment of his entry into the world, Jesus experienced the hardships associated with rejection. At the beginning of his public life, he was driven out of Nazareth after proclaiming in the synagogue the fulfillment in him of the year of grace that brings joy to the poor. There was not even a welcoming place for his death: they took him outside Jerusalem to crucify him.” (Leo XIV)
