Three death-row inmates were executed by lethal injection in the United States on Thursday, August 13, in three different states. This was the first time in more than sixteen years that three executions took place on the same day.

The Church continues to speak out against the death penalty. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the death penalty does not bring justice and that life imprisonment allows for the conversion of hearts.

Pope Francis ordered a revision of the Catechism in 2018, stating that the death penalty is in all cases inadmissible and contrary to human dignity.
