The bishops of the Pacific are urging caution as commercial deep-sea mining appears increasingly imminent. In an Aug. 10 pastoral statement, the Episcopal Conference of the Pacific, signed by its President, Archbishop Ryan P. Jimenez, said the absence of complete scientific certainty should never be an excuse for proceeding without due care. They encouraged all who bear responsibility for decisions to act with wisdom, transparency, humility and concern for the common good, and hoped their generation would be remembered for what it protected, not what it extracted.
