In a reflection on Capernaum, Fr Francesco Patton, OFM, recalls why Jesus left Nazareth to settle there, a move Matthew sees as fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy. In Capernaum Jesus called his Apostles, preached, healed the sick and revealed his identity as Messiah and Son of God.

Franciscan excavations uncovered the house of Peter, later a domus-ecclesia and then an octagonal church, and a synagogue from Jesus' time. For the site's Franciscan guardians, Capernaum is much more than an archaeological site: it is the city of Jesus, the house of the Lord.

Pilgrims can still profess with Peter: Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.
