A powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on 10 August, leaving more than 130 people dead and nearly 600 injured. The magnitude 7.4 tremor, centred near San José del Palmar in Chocó, damaged cities including Pereira and Manizales, where hospitals, churches and the cathedral were affected. In the face of this emergency, the Colombian Bishops' Conference expressed solidarity with victims, the missing, the injured and affected families, and said such a disaster cannot be faced individually. The Bishops said the emergency requires the country to recognise itself as one family and respond with generosity, responsibility and solidarity, while rescue operations continue.
